Irishman Pub “not just for townies”

As of July of 2012, the Irishman Pub has been under new ownership. Jerry Denning of Des Moines, always wanted to own a bar. When he learned that the Pub in Indianola was for sale he jumped on the opportunity.

“I’ve worked all my life and owning your own business, especially a bar, is just something that I had in the back of my mind,” says Denning.

With every new adventure, comes unexpected obstacles. Denning noticed that his business only attracted those who came there before.

“One thing that I learned quickly was that no Simpson kids come here, and that’s not right,” says Denning.

Interior of The Irishman Pub

For years The Irishman Pub has been known as a “townie bar”. Meaning, only Indianola residents go there. Strictly. Denning didn’t want his recently owned business to be known for that.

“I realized that my place has a bad rap for not being welcome to college kids, that had to change,” says Denning, “If someone gives someone trouble in here, I won’t be afraid to kick out the ‘regular’. This place is for everyone, if they don’t like it, then leave.”

Denning is also convinced that just about everyone in town has worked at his bar before he owned it. He said that didn’t stand for long.

“You wouldn’t believe how many people come up to me, saying they worked here and come behind the bar and make themselves a drink. That stopped pretty dang fast”

Starting a business isn’t the easiest thing, but after working out the kinks things start to find their place. Denning says new faces are trickling in and that’s exactly what he likes to see.

“I see more and more young people coming in here and ordering drinks. I hope they keep coming because it’s always good to see new faces here. Our beer is always cold.”

History of the FMS

Typically bars have their special house drink that represents their business. For some, it may be a certain tap beer, others it could simply be Crown & Coke. At the Zoo in Indianola, it’s the infamous FMS shot.

No, that’s not battery acid in a shot glass. That is one mouthful of sweet yet sour, electric alcohol. The recipe for this concoction has been a secret since the bar was established in 1995.

One night, Shannon, former co-owner of the Zoo was experimenting to create a house drink for the place. Little did she know that her adding a little bit of this, and a little bit of that, she would create the drink that will forever be known as the “Fuck Me Silly” shot.

Cheap, burn-less, and sweet, this drink is a must-have the next time you’re in town.

Don’t judge a bar by it’s exterior

Where do I begin with what makes the Zoo unique to the Inidanola bar scene?  At first glance it may not be the most elegant drinking hole but that is soon forgotten once you realize what great character it is.

The Zoo Bar

Unlike Mojos or other Indianola bars, the Zoo allows you to come in and sit down to chat with friends and play some cards while munching on popcorn.  If you are more of the dancing type, don’t you worry because there is space for that too!  Two other events that I believe make the Zoo unique are the occasional appearances but local students who play music on Thursday nights or when Party Party (a karaoke band) decides to come on Friday night once a month.  These two musical acts make the Zoo an exciting place to be and bring out others who may not make this bar their normal hangout.

Overall, the Zoo provides everything you would want in a bar: a great atmosphere, fun people to be around, dancing, drinks, and entertainment.  It may not appear to be an exciting place on the outside, but once you are in you will soon find out that it will be the only place you’ll want to be on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night.

Girls Night Out on the Square

It’s Indianola’s Annual Girls night out on the square tonight where the community women can shop until they drop, locally.

Girls Night Out starts at 5pm and goes until 9pm. The night starts off at Bob’s Custom Trophies where they’ll supply you with a goodie bag.  After that you’ll move on to the eateries, shops and bars.

2013 List of Top Party Schools

Parties are fun. No question about it. One question often wondered is if students choose their higher education based on the nightlife at the institution. It’s up for debate.

Princeton Review has been studying nightlife at colleges for years now. Finding the schools that party the most, party the least, smoke the most weed and which schools drink the most beer and hard liquor.

The facts may encourage or discourage a student’s and parent’s decision.

Many schools have remained in the top ten for the past three years now, while others have cleaned up their act to get off partying list. Those that are new include Tennessee University, University of Maine, and James Madison University.

Don’t worry Hawkeye fans, you moved up the list this year.

Live Music @ the Garage

The Monday Mourners will be playing tonight at The Garage starting at 8 PM.
